A Living Tradition

For centuries, artists have challenged both their intellect and skill by paying homage to those who came before them.

Jenness Cortez stands as one of the most accomplished contemporary practitioners of this tradition.

Her work weaves elements of historical masterpieces into original compositions—creating paintings that are at once rooted in tradition and unmistakably her own.

Seeing More Deeply

Cortez’s Homage paintings explore a central paradox of realism:

A painting is both
a window into an imagined space
and a physical object in itself.

Through this duality, her work invites viewers to:

•  look more carefully
•  question assumptions
•  rediscover what may have been overlooked

At the same time, these paintings celebrate the enduring joy of beauty, craftsmanship, and attentive seeing.

“ ‘It makes my heart sing!’ After more than five decades of involvement in the art world, this simple statement, made by a friend while looking at a splendid Monet painting, brought into bright clarity the way to know the genuine article–a real work of art. The paintings of Jenness Cortez make my heart sing.”
